The Effectiveness of Rational Emotive Behavior Counseling Program to Modify Irrational Thoughts for Mothers of Children with Intellectual Disabilities

Abstract

The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Rational Emotive Behavior Counseling Program to modify irrational thoughts for mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. The study sample consisted of 20 mothers of intellectually disabled children. The mothers were divided into two groups; control group (10 mothers) and experimental group (10 mothers). The study applied irrational thoughts scale among mothers of intellectually disabled children. In addition, the study applied a counseling program designed by the researcher consisting of 15 sessions and relying on Rational Emotive Behavioral Counseling techniques. The counseling program included lectures and facilitated discussions, refutation techniques, role-playing, role reversal, rational emotive imagination, and home assignment. The results showed the effectiveness of the counseling program to modify the irrational thoughts for mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. The study is concluded with some recommendations through results and suggestion of some future studies.
